Rapa Nui with Professor Terry Hunt | Stamps Scholars Program | July 22 – August 1
Exclusive to Stamps Scholars
🗿🌅🌴
Embark on an extraordinary academic expedition designed exclusively for Stamps Scholars, led by world-renowned archaeologist Professor Terry Hunt, to uncover the cultural and archaeological wonders of Rapa Nui. Our journey begins in Santiago, Chile, where the group arrives on July 22 and gathers for a welcome dinner, setting the stage for the immersive experience ahead. On July 23, we dive into Chile’s vibrant capital with a guided Santiago city tour, exploring historic neighborhoods, key landmarks, and cultural highlights. The day includes a visit to the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, providing essential academic context for the Indigenous cultures of the Americas and laying the groundwork for our time on Rapa Nui.
On July 24, we fly as a group to Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Our home for seven nights is Hotel Manavai, offering a comfortable and centrally located base in Hanga Roa that allows students to engage closely with daily life on the island. Under Professor Hunt’s expert guidance, students will explore Rapa Nui’s most significant archaeological and cultural sites, including Ahu Akivi, Ana Tepahu cave, and the iconic moai quarry at Rano Raraku. Excursions across volcanic landscapes, ceremonial platforms (ahu), and dramatic coastlines foster in-depth discussions on settlement, sustainability, and cultural resilience.
The program includes several special shared experiences on the island:
An evening dinner paired with stargazing, highlighting Polynesian navigation and celestial knowledge
A traditional BBQ lunch at Anakena Beach, set beneath swaying palms and overlooking the Pacific
An evening cultural performance at Te Moana, showcasing Rapa Nui music, dance, and storytelling
As each day unfolds, students gain new academic insights while forming a deep connection to the island’s history, people, and landscapes.
On July 31, we depart Rapa Nui and return to Santiago for one final overnight stay. The program concludes on August 1, with departures from Chile and a lasting appreciation for the cultural and archaeological significance of Rapa Nui. This experience blends rigorous academic inquiry with meaningful cultural engagement and is offered exclusively to Stamps Scholars.
